This song didn’t begin as another story from my previous Day of the Dead experiences. It began with what happened after I wrote the others. What I thought was the end of the album became the beginning of one more song. I realized that once I write a song and listen to it repeatedly for a while, the story begins to release from my life. The memory is still there, but the energy surrounding it is different. It no longer feels active or connected to me in the same way. I didn’t think any of these stories were weighing on me. They didn’t feel unfinished, and I wasn’t consciously trying to let them go. I only recognized the weight after it was gone and I felt the unexpected lightness left behind. That became the unexpected gift of writing Follow the Sound . The other songs tell the stories....

The Sound That Became the Story

The Story Behind the Song

“Follow the Sound” is the first track and namesake of my album, Follow the Sound.

It comes from the beginning of a Day of the Dead DeVotchKa concert at the Boulder Theater. “Falling in Between” was the first song I wrote from that night. “Follow the Sound” came later, when I decided to put the album together and returned to where the story began. This song stays with the first pull—the red velvet carpet, the doors, the room turning gold and shadow and the sound drawing me toward something I had never known.

In addition to this being my first DeVotchKa concert, it was also my first Day of the Dead experience. This world was only beginning to reveal itself.

That is where the album begins. “Follow the Sound” opens the door, and everything after it follows what was set in motion there.

The Sound Behind the Song

“Follow the Sound” is an alternative track with an old-world folk undercurrent. The verses move with a steady hypnotic pull before opening into a fuller and more dramatic chorus.

The chorus grows wild and hypnotic as psychedelic rhythm and dubstep elements push the track into a darker experimental sound. Old-world instrumentation moves against industrial production, giving the song a romantic sound that carries the warmth and shadows of the old theater, dragging at your soul.
