“A New Day Has Dawned” — The Story and Sound Behind the Song

Listen to "A New Day Has Dawned" on: Spotify | Apple Music A Gift to the Living from the Day of the Dead “A New Day Has Dawned” is the eighth and final track on the album  Follow the Sound . This song didn’t begin as another story from my previous Day of the Dead experiences. It began with what happened after I wrote the others. What I thought was the end of the album became the beginning of one more song. I realized that once I write a song and listen to it repeatedly for a while, the story begins to release from my life. The memory is still there, but the energy surrounding it is different. It no longer feels active or connected to me in the same way. I didn’t think any of these stories were weighing on me. They didn’t feel unfinished, and I wasn’t consciously trying to let them go. I only recognized the weight after it was gone and I felt the unexpected lightness left behind. That became the unexpected gift of writing Follow the Sound . The other songs tell the stories....

“Falling in Between” — The Story and Sound Behind the Song

A Song from Somewhere in Between

“Falling in Between” is the second track on the album Follow the Sound.

The Story Behind the Song

Even though “Falling in Between” is the second song on the album, it was the first song I wrote. It's about my DeVotchKa Day of the Dead concert experience at the Boulder Theater.

The show was an enchanting mix of music, theater and circus. People with painted skull faces, performers appearing throughout the show, smoke, lights — and then there was the music. The accordion, strings, horns, upright bass and Nick Urata's unmistakable voice. Everything about this concert was so perfectly unusual.

That's the feeling behind “Falling in Between.” The lyrics capture pieces of that night, from the velvet and smoke to the chaotic circus and painted faces. The changing chorus follows that feeling of being drawn further into the experience, from slipping in between to falling in between, until finally, “I've fallen in between.”

All these years later, it is still my all-time favorite concert, and I can still remember how that night felt. It was my introduction to DeVotchKa, the beginning of my love for their music and an experience that eventually found its way into my music. I ended up loving my song ‘Falling in Between’ so much that I decided to put together an entire album of my Day of the Dead experiences, Follow the Sound.

The Sound Behind the Song

“Falling in Between” is an alternative track with an old-world sound pushed into experimental, electronic and psychedelic territory. Guitar, strings, accordion, upright bass, saxophone and tuba move against deep bass and experimental electronic combinations, giving the track its strange mix of old and modern. The sound is hypnotic and surreal, with a wild rhythmic chorus and an extended instrumental ending that drifts deeper into the trance before fading away.
