This song didn’t begin as another story from my previous Day of the Dead experiences. It began with what happened after I wrote the others. What I thought was the end of the album became the beginning of one more song. I realized that once I write a song and listen to it repeatedly for a while, the story begins to release from my life. The memory is still there, but the energy surrounding it is different. It no longer feels active or connected to me in the same way. I didn’t think any of these stories were weighing on me. They didn’t feel unfinished, and I wasn’t consciously trying to let them go. I only recognized the weight after it was gone and I felt the unexpected lightness left behind. That became the unexpected gift of writing Follow the Sound . The other songs tell the stories....

A Day of the Dead Album

The Story Behind the Album

Follow the Sound is an eight-track album built from my Day of the Dead experiences. The songs move through different places and memories while remaining inside the same musical world.

Where It All Began

The album begins with a Day of the Dead DeVotchKa concert at Boulder Theater. It was my first Day of the Dead experience and my first DeVotchKa concert. These tracks are built around the feeling of being inside the theater as the music, the performance and everything around me began creating a world I had never experienced before.

A few years later I'm living in San Diego and my daughter and I attend a Day of the Dead celebration in Old Town. These tracks come from that night and move through dreams, memories and connections that relate to those experiences.

The Sound of the Album

The eight tracks on Follow the Sound each have their own identity while clearly belonging to the same musical world. The album has an old-world quality with underlying alternative, electronic, psychedelic and experimental elements. Some tracks are darker and more hypnotic, while others are brighter, more fluid or more dramatic. The voices and rhythms change, but the same musical foundation holds the album together.
