The Story After choosing the relationship, this song moves into something that had always been there between us — how naturally we moved together. He used to comment on it all the time. How in sync we were. Walking somewhere, moving through a crowd, doing anything physical or mental. Our energy was aligned. We could be across a room from each other and know what the other was thinking, what was happening without a word being said. He was fascinated by it and would deliberately push the limits of how in sync we were, just to see how far it went. I wasn't as surprised. I felt this connection instantly and wouldn't have dated him if it hadn't been this way. That connection became the center of We Move Like Smoke : “We move like smoke No word No sound” The Sound Listen...

In a Split Second - The Story and Sound Behind the Song

In a Split Second, He Became a Bore

The Story

“In a Split Second” comes after “Starting to Feel Like Us”.

At this point in the story, things were good. We were living together, finding our rhythm and starting to feel like a couple without losing ourselves.

Then, in a split second, the energy changed. Nothing had actually happened, but suddenly he was carrying the problems of the world and acting like I was going to accept this as part of my life.

This song isn't sad or wounded. It is the instant turnoff that happens when someone suddenly becomes a problem you did not sign up for.

Then I started to doubt. I started to think this was not working out.

The bridge says the truth plainly. I heard him out. I heard what he had to say. He said this was who he was. I said it was not me.

I am not interested in relationships where someone presents one version, then turns around and says the part I liked was not real, or surprise, there is another side he did not show me. I date what I'm seeing. I date the direction, the energy and the life that seems to be forming. If the whole thing takes a turn toward a life I want nothing to do with, it will eventually end.

I was not trying to change him. I was not trying to fix him. He could be who he was saying he was. I just was not going to have this as part of my life.

The Sound

The sound is alternative, alt-electronic with Russian phonk influence. The verses are crisp and spoken-sung with a bratty, unimpressed attitude. The chorus is addictive and rhythmic, built around the instant switch.

It is disgusted, sharp and moving. Not heartbreak. Just the moment I looked at him and thought, in a split second, absolutely not.

The Previous Chapter

“Starting to Feel Like Us” is the story that comes before “In a Split Second”.
