This song didn’t begin as another story from my previous Day of the Dead experiences. It began with what happened after I wrote the others. What I thought was the end of the album became the beginning of one more song. I realized that once I write a song and listen to it repeatedly for a while, the story begins to release from my life. The memory is still there, but the energy surrounding it is different. It no longer feels active or connected to me in the same way. I didn’t think any of these stories were weighing on me. They didn’t feel unfinished, and I wasn’t consciously trying to let them go. I only recognized the weight after it was gone and I felt the unexpected lightness left behind. That became the unexpected gift of writing Follow the Sound . The other songs tell the stories....

Starting to Feel Like Us Is About Becoming a Something

The Story

“Starting to Feel Like Us” comes after the songs “Don’t Need One” and “Like It This Way”. We had moved in together fast. It was all working out, and our relationship was changing.

This song is about the point where I started to feel like we were becoming more than boyfriend and girlfriend, but without losing the things I enjoyed about being together. It was starting to feel like us.

The line:

“starting to feel like a something
but still feeling like us”

is the center of the song. It points to moving forward without entering the socially acceptable decline people like to mistake for progress. It was becoming something, but it was still familiar and it was still alive.

The Sound

The sound is a dark, hazy and warm alternative groove. It has a steady pull, close vocals and a late-night afterglow running through it. It is moody, seductive and alive without losing the comfort of something that is starting to feel familiar.
