This song didn’t begin as another story from my previous Day of the Dead experiences. It began with what happened after I wrote the others. What I thought was the end of the album became the beginning of one more song. I realized that once I write a song and listen to it repeatedly for a while, the story begins to release from my life. The memory is still there, but the energy surrounding it is different. It no longer feels active or connected to me in the same way. I didn’t think any of these stories were weighing on me. They didn’t feel unfinished, and I wasn’t consciously trying to let them go. I only recognized the weight after it was gone and I felt the unexpected lightness left behind. That became the unexpected gift of writing Follow the Sound . The other songs tell the stories....

The Story Behind the Song

“Already Hers” is about my daughter reaching a future she had been working toward sooner than expected.

What was meant to come later started arriving early. The right opportunities appeared, the right people found her and plans that had once seemed separate began coming together in the shape she wanted.

It was not one part of her future moving ahead of schedule. Everything was. What she thought she was still moving toward had already started moving toward her.

“Already Hers” is an alternative track built around a relaxed alt-pop groove with a subtle reggae undercurrent. A slightly raspy female alto carries the verses with an easy conversational delivery before the chorus opens into a bright melodic hook.
