This song didn’t begin as another story from my previous Day of the Dead experiences. It began with what happened after I wrote the others. What I thought was the end of the album became the beginning of one more song. I realized that once I write a song and listen to it repeatedly for a while, the story begins to release from my life. The memory is still there, but the energy surrounding it is different. It no longer feels active or connected to me in the same way. I didn’t think any of these stories were weighing on me. They didn’t feel unfinished, and I wasn’t consciously trying to let them go. I only recognized the weight after it was gone and I felt the unexpected lightness left behind. That became the unexpected gift of writing Follow the Sound . The other songs tell the stories....

Don’t Plant Roots Where You Don’t Want to Grow

The Story Behind the Song

“Don’t Plant Roots” is about a life my daughter and I had started creating around a place we had always intended to be temporary.

Our plans have changed, and we are going to be here a little longer than expected. So, we decided to start looking at purchasing an oceanfront property. We were having fun with the plans, and what we were creating would have been amazing. But little by little, our attention shifted from the future we actually want to this temporary plan. The plans were giving permanence to a life neither of us really wanted.

Then one morning I woke up with a clear message:

“Don’t plant roots
Where you don’t want to grow.”

When I told my daughter, we laughed at how ridiculously profound it sounded. But we also knew immediately that it was right. That entire plan ended with one sentence. We put it to bed, got our thoughts back on track and returned our attention to the future we had wanted all along.

The Sound Behind the Song

“Don’t Plant Roots” is an alternative track built around a funky alternative groove that represents our current location and a light reggae undercurrent that carries the sound of where we are going.

A smoky female vocal moves through the verses with loose rhythmic phrasing. The reggae comes further forward in parts, so the sound of the future keeps moving through the place we are still in.

Why We’re Staying Here Longer

“Already Hers” is about my daughter’s education and research coming together better than she had planned. With everything working out so perfectly for her at our current location, we decided to remain longer than we originally intended.
